Bangladesh Taka

1 Taka, 1992
bangladesh 1 taka
Bangladesh is a poor and densely populated country, and the one taka coin has the theme of a small family. We can see a family of four-two parents and two children. And the writing at the bottom says: "small family happy family-food for all." So a small family can fulfill its needs and stay happy, and at the same time there will be lesser number of mouths to feed, so there will be food for all. This is one way to spread the message that we need to control the unabated growth of population. The obverse shows the Shapla flower.

2 Taka, 2004
bangladesh 2 taka
Bangladesh was created in 1971 following the last Indo-Pak war in which Gen. Niazi of Pakistan signed the surrender documents in the presence of Maj.Gen. Jagjit singh Arora of India, and East Pakistan became Bangladesh. Being a new country, Bangladesh doesnt have a very long list of coins. This 2 Taka coin for one, doesnt find a mention in the Krause catalog. It shows a boy and a girl learning the Bangla alphabet, so it has a literacy based theme to it. The obverse shows the Shapla flower.

The reverse shows a bridge on the Yamuna, along with the date and denomination. The lettering at the top reads "Jomuna Bohumukhi Shetu" or the Yamuna multi-purpose bridge. This bridge connects two halves of Bangladesh: Bhuapur on the East bank to Sirajganj on the West bank. Apart from the function of transportation, it facilitates the transmission of electricity and natural gas, and also provided for the integration of telecommunication links. The bridge is located on the Trans-Asian railway which, when completed, will provide uninterrupted rail and road link from South-East Asia to North-West Europe.

The obverse shows the Shapla flower within wreath.Shapla (Water Lily) is the national flower of Banladesh. Shapla is a flower floating at ease in almost every water bodies of Bangladesh. Brooks, ponds, lakes etc. are abodes of this flower. There are two types of Shapla differing in color. One is white and the other is pink. Other than adding to the beauty of Bangladesh, Shapla is a delicious item of food for Bangladeshis. Rural people consume it as curry. Children are also fond of eating the stem and the fruit even green. Bangladeshis adore this flower which is expressed better by making a dummy of Shapla called Shapla Chattar at Motijheel in Dhaka.

1989 Jawaharlal Nehru UNC set mint mark(U)
jawaharlal nehru set 1989 mint mark
This mint mark is unique for Indian coins as it is there only on the Jawaharlal Nehru UNC set of 1989. the "U" signifies UNC , though it can be easily mistaken to be the mint mark of some foreign mint. This set was minted in the Bombay mint.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first and to date the longest serving president of independent India, from the independence in 1947 to his death in 1964. He was a leading figure in the Indian independence struggle. He was a charismatic and radical leader who advocated complete independence from foreign rule and self governance. He is also known as "the architect of modern India" and "pandit Nehru" where pandit is a honorific for a scholarly and learned person or a teacher. His birthday , which is on 14th November , is celebrated as children's day in India. He has written a book titled 'The discovery of India' which was aired on the Indian national television, DoorDarshan, as a series titled "Bharat Ek Khoj" in which he was portrayed by Roshan Seth, who portrayed Nehru in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi as well. Along with Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and the Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito, he started the Non Aligned movement in 1955 in a world where USSR and USA were the two big powers and most of the countries were aligning themselves with either of the two, creating the atmosphere of an impending third world war(the situation is known as cold war). As of 2008, there were 118 members in the NAM, though one may say that with the fall of USSR, the situation of cold war is no more and maybe NAM is not relevant anymore.

Nehru was a big advocate of socialism and his major failure was on the defense front as first Pakistan was able to occupy a major part of Kashmir in 1947 succeeding the partition and he also severely miscalculated the intentions of China and the country's own military capabilities which were brutally exposed during the Sino-Indian war of 1962. His health started declining very quickly after that and he died of a heart attack in 1964.

The first commemorative coin of independent India was released on Nehru's death in 1964. In 1989, apart from this set from which the 1 rupee and 5 rupee coins were also released in circulation; a stamp was released in the erstwhile soviet union.

Nehru has recently received criticism from Jaswant Singh of BJP in a controversial book titled " Jinnah: India-partition-independence" in which he questioned Nehru's part in the partition and made a favourable view of Jinnah. Singh was later expelled from the BJP.
